Onions


Onions (Allium cepa) (Latin 'cepa' = onion) are also known as the bulb onion or common onions. They are biennial plants, but are usually grown annually. Modern varieties typically grow to a height of 15 to 45 cm (6 to 18 in). Onions are available in three colour varieties of Yellow or brown onions (red). Characteristics

Yellow onions turn a rich, dark brown when caramelized and give French onion soup its sweet flavour. The red onion (purple) is a good choice for fresh use when its colour livens up the dish.

White onions are the traditional onions that are used in Asian cuisines They have a golden colour when cooked and a particularly sweet flavour when sautéed.

Red onions are onions with reddish-purplish skin, and similarly-coloured lines layer the white rings inside the onion. They can be sweeter than regular white / yellow onions. Some are perfectly round, others are more flattened on top.

 

Uses:

Bulbs from the onion family had been used as a food source. Onions are often chopped and used as an ingredient in various hearty warm dishes, and may also be used as a main ingredient in their own right. Since they are vegetables, nutritionists suggest that onions are to be eaten raw to maintain its essential components.
